Klappentext: "Graceful and powerful,
the subject of art and myth, lions inspire both fascination and fear. Because they hunt cooperatively, they
are considered the most formidable of predators. They are also the most social of wild cats, forming
family-like prides held together by strong bonds between females, who raise their cubs communally. Young
males lead nomadic existences until they attain prides of their own, while generations of females may
inhabit the same territory. But lions also exhibit shifting, nuanced behaviour that ranges far beyond these
simple outlines. Illustrated with two hundred colour photographs of lions at every stage of their lives,
this striking volume reveals the worlds of four neighboring prides that roam the diverse habitats - swamps,
seasonal rivers, dry floodplains, acacia forests, and thick woodland - of Botswana's Okavango Delta. Drawing
on continuing field research begun in 1995, Pieter Kat shows how Okavango lions challenge long-held
assumptions about sociability, mating strategies, and hunting techniques. Pride males will readily mate with
females from other prides, sometimes even abandoning their original group; females often leave their
offspring vulnerable to predators; and as hunters, lions are more prone to mistakes and scavenging than is
commonly believed. Few people realize that lions have lost more of their ancestral range than any other
terrestrial mammal. As they continue to compete for territory with ranchers and farmers, the conservation
outlook for these large predators becomes increasingly uncertain. Unlike the more-often studied groups of
East Africa's Serengeti, the Okavango
lions also face dramatic, seasonal variation in the availability of water and prey, possibly making them
more nomadic than lions in other regions of Africa. This broadbased, richly illustrated study celebrates not
only the beauty but also the complexity of Africa's most emblematic predator."

Relentless Enemies Lions and Buffalo
von Beverly Joubert (Fotos) & Dereck Joubert (Text)
Autor: "In an amazing place called
Duba Plains in Botswana, a relatively new island is home to three prides of lions and just over a thousand
buffalo. The interactions that happen each day are intense. Three prides compete for the prey but far from
being a one sided relationship where lions hunt from the herd, it has become a battle between them with
lions often being chased and occasionally killed as well. The intensity and rawness of this, almost
exclusively day time, hunting, is unique. But the opportunity to witness there battles is a rare chance to
see and analyze what makes Africa so interesting to us, the chance to see life so transparently on the edge
and to think about why we are so fascinated by these extremes."
