Klappentext: "Many Victorian
travellers left records of what they observed on voyages around the globe; few have left the rich legacy of
Thomas Baines. No ordinary traveller, Baines was a remarkable artist and meticulous observer. As a Victorian
he exhibited all the marvellous versatility which that era nourished in gifted individuals. He was able to
straddle the fields of art and science with a flair that is lost to us today. His travels took him on
numerous journeys into southern Africa and Australia. During these voyages of exploration, he kept journals
that read as fascinating anthropological and naturalist accounts. He also interpreted the incidents, people,
animals and landscapes that he encountered. In oils, watercolours and pencil, Thomas Baines left a
remarkable visual record of the expanding British Empire. Today his paintings and sketches command high
prices, and are housed, along with his writings, in museums and archival collections in South Africa,
Zimbabwe and England. The Life and Work of Thomas Baines is the first comprehensive survey to be
published since 1941. Other studies of various aspects of Baines's life and art have appeared during the
intervening years, but all are now out of print. With the benefit of fresh knowledge and modern attitudes,
the authors embark on a detailed appraisal of the vicissitudes of Baines's life and of his prolific artistic
output. Impeccably constructed, the book recounts each of Baines's journeys, echoing the sense of adventure
which prompted Baines to write that his major impulse in life was 'the desire of travel'. The reader is
treated to excellent reproductions of many of Baines's canvases and sketches. The Life and Work of Thomas
Baines is an important contribution to Africana collections."

Synopsis: "Captain Harris, an officer
in the East India Company's Bombay Engineers, was invalided to the Cape for two years, from 1835-1837. In
1836, after conferring with the naturalist Dr. Andrew Smith, he and Richard Williamson set out from Algoa
Bay, by way of Somerset and the Orange River and travelled in a north-easterly direction until they reached
the kraals of the famous Matabele chief Moselikatze. He proved friendly and allowed them to return via a
previously closed route. The first published account of the journey appeared in Bombay in 1838 (Narrative
of an Expedition in Southern Africa); encouraged by the favourable reception, Harris went on to publish Portraits
of the Game and Wild Animals of Southern Africa which was based around his sketches of the game and wild
animals he had encountered in his travels. This full size (17" x 23½") facsimile reprint is
quarter bound in Rhodesian buffalo leather."

Klappentext: "Captain (later Sir)
William Cornwallis Harris, one of the more notable of the early Victorian travellers, recollected that he
had been addicted to the sport of shooting 'from boyhood upwards... my first essay in practical gunnery was
made at the early age of six'. He was to sustain this passion - in India, and in the still largely
unexplored interior of the southern African subcontinent - throughout his comparatively short life. He died
in 1848, at the age of 41. Harris, was, however, more than just another adventurous English 'sportsman'.
Hunt he did, and on a grand scale, but he also wrote evocatively of his explorations, and sketched, with
considerable skill and a fine eye for detail, the animals of the then teeming plains north of the Orange and
Vaal rivers, committing to paper a wealth of visual and textual information that represented a truly
worthwhile addition to the body of scientific knowledge of his era. One of the splendid results of this deep
interest in natural history was Portraits of the Game and Wild Animals of Southern Africa, first
published in 1840 and here reprinted in facsimile. As an artist, Harris cannot be rated much above the
average, though some of his drawings have real merit, and all have charm. But he was an acute observer and
meticulously accurate recorder who sketched in context (landscapes, trees, plants, intriguing features of
the veld appear in the illustrations), and the results were a revelation to contemporary naturalists.
Harris's sketches for Portraits were reproduced with remarkable delicacy and interpretive skill by
the lithographer Frank Howard, printed in black, and then hand-tinted by talented colourists. Together,
artist, lithographer and colourist combined to make Portraits of the Game and Wild Animals of Southern
Africa not only a work of historical and zoological importance, but one with an elegance, a distinction,
all its own. This is a book that both delights the eye and intrigues the mind, and it will prove a graceful
and valued addition to the home library."

Verleger: "Capt. Harris was an
accomplished writer and an observant and reliable naturalist, as can be seen by the remarkable detail in the
comprehensive captions to his portraits, as well as being the first really competent wildlife artist to
appear on the southern African scene. He was the first to bring to the attention of the western naturalists
the existence of the sable antelope called for sometime afterwards, Harris' buck. While some of his
paintings, particularly those of the elephant and the hippopotamus, are undoubtedly not accurate depictions,
it must be remembered that these were completed after his hunting trip; and few mounted museum specimens
existed to jog his memory, while the camera had not yet been invented. The map he drew of his travels, which
is reproduced in this book, is the only one that exists to show the contemporary situations of the early
settlements established by the voortrekkers during the Great Trek. The first edition of this book consisted
of a mere 500 copies. Its beauty has made it the rarest, most sought after, as well as the most expensive
piece of Africana ever published. Since 1840, two further editions were published - expensive editions for
the specialist collector - which has ensured this outstanding work on African wildlife has remained
virtually unknown to the average man in the street, to whom the heritage of Africa most truly belongs. The
text of this wonderful book has not been produced facsimile. In the first edition, the text was widely
spread and difficult to read. For this reason it has been carefully edited to eliminate some words of
archaic useage which deter the modern reader, while keeping the old spellings of the various game animals,
African tribes and place names, which, the publishers believe, add a great charm and a spirit of the times
to this undying classic."

Thomas Baines
His Life and Explorations in South
Africa, Rhodesia and Australia, 1820-1875
Illustrated by a selection of Thomas Baines' water-colours, drawings and prints. With captions and a new
introduction by F. R. Bradlow.

Nachdruck von Thomas Baines of King's
Lynn: Explorer and Artist, 1820-1875 (Großbritannien, 1941) mit neuen Illustrationen.
Klappentext: "Last year was the one
hundredth anniversary of the death of Thomas Baines, the outstanding painter and recorder of the mid-19C in
South Africa - a known oeuvre of over four thousand pictures has been established by the art-history
researcher Frank Bradlow, and can be seen in collections in South Africa, Rhodesia, the U.K., and in
Australia. Baines was much more than an artist: he was also a successful and enterprising explorer and
cartographer whose entire life was spent in travelling, investigating, searching and - wherever he went and
in whatever circumstances - making pictures. He was also a scientific researcher (no less than 18 plants are
named after him). This book is the definitive biography of an outstanding personality. Of the several
ambitious journeys-of-exploration into the interior, the following were noteworthy: to the Orange and Vaal
Rivers during 1848-53; with Dr. Livingstone to the Zambesi in 1860; with James Chapman through South West
Africa to Victoria Falls in 1861; and to Matabeleland in 1869-72. He also made an important journey of
exploration in Australia and the surrounding seas with A.C. Gregory. Professor Wallis describes these
travels and the role of Thomas Baines in a book that was originally published in 1941, now out of print and
rare. The present text is a reprint, complete; but more has been added: abundant illustration reproduced
from Baines' own works; a new introduction (on the author) and comprehensive descriptive captions by F.R.
Bradlow; and a new, exhaustive index. It is an exciting story: what emerges is a fine and courageous
character, restless and energetic, of integrity and kindness - and his contacts with Livingstone, Chapman,
Andersson, Hartley, Lobengula and many others make a lively story of interesting personalities. And wherever
he travelled, he made pictures, almost invariably dated and with accurate place names - over four thousand
are on record. He sketched in pencil and in water-colour; he revelled in small oil paintings; (he undertook
commissions for large set-pieces, often from memory or imagination). Landscapes and people and animals and
ships and trees and houses - almost always directly from life and often on the spot. Almost 170 monochrome
and eight colour reproductions of Baines' drawings and water-colours (not oils) are included; these
illustrations have been chosen so as to relate to the text, either by directly illustrating an incident or
person, or by providing visual background and atmosphere: the result is a pictorial treat, and a fine survey
of Baines' non-formal work."
