Verleger: "The world of gorillas has
increasingly become intertwined with the encroaching world of humans. Laws now protect gorillas but that is
only because up until recently they were in grave danger of becoming extinct. Slaughtered by poachers, the
gorilla still faces an uncertain future. The efforts to educate people on the behavior, history, and legends
of gorillas could be their only hope for a decent future. Scientists have long been working to find the
missing link between primates and humans, while movies like King Kong and Gorillas in the Mist have
shown varying portrayals of gorillas. This book continues in the tradition of trying to explain the nature
of gorillas and their connection to humans. Devoting much of its focus on man's involvement in the lives of
these wild animals, Gorillas includes a list of gorilla foundations you can support. This highly
informative book includes large color photographs, interesting facts, and stories of famous gorillas, like
Koko."

Südafrikanische Lizenzausgabe von Gorillas
(Hongkong, 1997).
Synopsis: "This work covers all three
subspecies of the gorilla, photographed over an 8-year period. As well as the mountain gorilla, rare shots
of the eastern and western lowland mountain subspecies are included. The book illustrates much of the
knowledge that primatologists have culled about gorillas and how they live. Once feared as chest-thumping,
man-eating monsters, gorillas are known to be some of the gentlest creatures on earth. The future of these
last remaining great apes is uncertain, and the last chapter of this book ponders their fate, under threat
from civil wars, deforestation, indiscriminate hunting and the use of gorilla body parts as fetishes and
souvenirs."

Gorillas Natural History and Conservation
von Kelly J. Stewart (Text),
Fotos von Karl Ammann, Steve Bloom
& Michael Nichols
Synopsis: "The last of the apes
'discovered' by Western science, the gorilla is our closest relative. Gorillas covers the
characteristics (life history, group life, reproduction, mortality) and ecology of these creatures. Stewart
also discusses the serious threats that gorillas face, and informs readers about what can be done to protect
them. Gorillas is a must-have for nature enthusiasts, environmentalists, and animal lovers. This book
is an excellent general introduction that's full of fascinating facts and fabulous four-color photographs.
It presents scientific insights and information in a way that is both readable and highly enjoyable for a
popular audience."

Klappentext: "In Praise of
Primates is a visual tribute to our closest genetic relatives. Renowned wildlife photographer Steve
Bloom has created a spectacular portfolio which goes beneath the skin and shows a rare insight into the
world of these animals. The majority of the pictures were taken in the wild, and those taken in captivity
were only in rescue centres or places which have a good track record for the care of endangered species. His
travels took him to a research centre in the jungle of Kalimantan province, Borneo, where he photographed
orangutans, proboscis monkeys and gibbons. He made several expeditions into the Virunga Mountains on the
borders of Uganda, Rwanda and The Democratic Republic of Congo, where he photographed the highly endangered
mountain gorillas. He photographed wild chimpanzees in Chambura Gorge, to the north of the Virungas in
Uganda. Many of the roads on which he travelled were accessible only by four wheel drive vehicles, and the
daily treks into the forested mountains were physically taxing in the extreme. He travelled to the
snow-capped peaks of the Japanese Alps to photograph snow monkeys - the only primates, apart from humans,
who are known to bathe in hot springs. Steve Bloom's approach is aesthetic rather than scientific. His
pictures are intended to move us deeply, and to foster a realisation of how close we are to the many other
creatures with whom we share the world."

Verleger: "James and Other Apes is
a magnificent book that will introduce people to a new world, stimulate thinking, and help people to
understand better our place in nature in the scheme of things. For many it will be a humbling experience. We
are different from other animals (as they are different from each other) but not as different as we thought.
(Jane Goodall, founder Jane Goodall Institute,
UN Messenger for Peace.)
50 great apes – chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and bonobos, our closest biological relatives – are
featured in this series of portraits photographed over four years in ape sanctuaries in Cameroon, the
Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Germany and the USA. Mainly orphans and
victims of the illicit trade in 'bushmeat', and representing species whose survival is under threat, each is
photographed as a unique individual. With case note biographies, and introduced with a powerful and moving
essay by Jane Goodall, this book celebrates the great apes. The faces that look back at us also raise
profound moral and scientific questions – including what it means to define ourselves 'human'."
