Rückentext: "The Birds of East
Africa is the first comprehensive field guide to a spectacular region for birding. Covering all the
resident, migrant and vagrant birds of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi it describes a remarkable
1388 species. Three experienced artists have painstakingly prepared 287 new plates showing 3400 images
illustrating all the plumages and major races likely to be encountered. Set opposite the plates are concise
descriptive accounts describing identification, status, range, habits and voice, and range maps for each
species. Introductory sections provide notes on how to use the species accounts, the nomenclature adopted,
conservation issues, where to send records, and maps of protected and other important bird areas. Between
them the authors have over 40 years of experience in leading bird tours and conducting conservation work in
the region. East Africa shelters a remarkable diversity of birds, including many seriously threatened
species with small and vulnerable ranges. They form a constantly colourful, noisy and highly extrovert part
of the landscape. This book is sure to become an indispensable guide for anyone interested in studying or
conserving the birds of the East Africa region, as well as to the many visitors who simply want to enjoy the
sheer beauty of its birds."

& Schwarzweißfotos, Schwarzweißillustrationen Southern Book Publishers
(Südafrika), Januar 1999, ISBN 1-86812-764-8

Newman's Birds of Southern Africa (Reissued 7th Edition)
Synopsis: "Kenya is situated astride
the Equator and is one of the most beautiful countries in Africa. From the idyllic white beaches of coral
sand, facing the Indian Ocean, to the snowfields at the top of Mt Kenya more than 5000 metres above sea
level, it is a land of great diversity, wild landscapes and abundant wildlife. The flora too is very varied.
Among the trees and shrubs of the forests and bush and in the extensive grasslands, nearly three hundred
different kinds of orchids can be found. This is the first book devoted to the orchids of Kenya. It deals
with all the epiphytic species, the lianes in the genus Vanilla, and finally the terrestrial kinds. They are
all described in a logical and comparable way. Approximately two-thirds of the species are illustrated in
colour, many of them in close-up. An important chapter describing the work on orchid conservation at the National Museums of Kenya,
in Nairobi, is also included. The text describes each species, where it grows in Kenya, and when it flowers.
Other countries in Africa where each can be found are also mentioned. For each of the 50 genera there are
historical notes and distribution data as well as hints on cultivation. Keys to the genera and species are
provided. In conjunction with the photographs and descriptions, these keys will enable everyone with an
interest in these fascinating plants to identify those they find in Kenya today. The book will also be
useful to orchid enthusiasts living in or visiting other parts of Africa because many of the species are
widespread in the continent. Growers of African orchids in many other parts of the world will find the
wealth of information it contains invaluable."

delicate insectivorous sundew plant found in the permanently wet bogs to the towering, majestic jackalberry
trees, from the strikingly beautiful lotus flower to rustling stands of the giant papyrus sedge, this field
guide to the plants of the Okavango Delta will prove invaluable to botanists and interested beginners alike.
More than 220 of the most common plant species found in the area are described and illustrated. For each

identification, a number of features have been included in this book: clear, accurate ink drawings of each
species; simple identification keys, which use characters that are easy to see and recognise in the field;
illustrated 'quick guides' to the most common plants within selected habitats. As vegetation ecologists,

Sasol Birds of Southern Africa (2nd Edition) The region's most
comprehensively illustrated guide
von Ian Sinclair (Text), Phil Hockey (Text) & Warwick Tarboton (Text),
Peter Hayman (Illustrationen) &
Norman Arlott (Illustrationen)
Paperback, 2. Auflage, 448 Seiten,
Farbtafeln, Farb- & Schwarzweißillustrationen, Übersichts- & Verbreitungskarten Struik Publishers
(Südafrika), Januar 1998, ISBN 1-86872-033-0
Beschreibung: "This field guide,
first published in 1993 became a runaway best-seller and soon found its place alongside the other,
older-established guides to birds of the sub-region. This successful publication was followed in 1996 by The Sasol Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds of Southern Africa,
which allowed for the artwork to be reproduced at a larger scale. The Larger Guide also introduced
new user-friendly features, including colour coding and a full-colour spread of reduced bird images
representing distinct bird groups as a quick reference guide. The text and maps were also updated, and new
species to the southern Africa region were included in three additional plates at the back of the book. This
second edition incorporates all of the new features of The Sasol
Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds of Southern Africa plus a great deal more. Each species the book
provides the bird's common name (English and Afrikaans), its scientific name and its Roberts number. Furthermore for each species the following
information is given: its length; key points for identification; plumage descriptions of the male, female
and immature, and breeding and non-breeding birds, where applicable; typical behaviour; call; habitat; nests
and food, where this is relevant to identification. Colour coding and reduced bird images make finding bird
groups much easier than before and a list of bird families (in alphabetical order), with their page
references, appears at the front of the book as a further quick reference. A checklist to birds of the
region is included. All new species introduced in The Sasol Larger
Illustrated Guide to Birds of Southern Africa have now been incorporated into the standard field guide -
and in their rightful places (family groups) within the book. Recent discoveries and reclassifications are
included, representing the most recent research. Previously cluttered plates have been uncluttered, in some
instances resulting in the creation of a new plate for clearer presentation of the bird images and 40 new
images have been painted and have been incorporated into the plates. Many plate changes and rearrangements
have been effected to improve the existing layout. Colour images of relevant birds have been introduced into
the family accounts at the front of the book. Wherever possible, labels on the colour plates have been
dropped in favour of a numbering system that corresponds with numbered species accounts, starting at number
1 on each new spread."

von Ian Sinclair (Text) & Phil Hockey (Text),
Peter Hayman (Illustrationen) &
Norman Arlott (Illustrationen), Vorwort von Paul du P. Kruger
Rückentext: "Sasol The Larger
Illustrated Guide to Birds of Southern Africa is the most comprehensively illustrated field guide to
birds of the subregion. All of the more than 900 species currently recognised as occurring within southern
Africa are covered in this guide, in more than 4000 images spread over 200 colour plates. The text details
plumage characteristics, habitat, status and call, and habits been carefully integrated with the plates for
ease of use in the field. Following on the success of the smaller-format Sasol Birds of Southern Africa [1st edition], this new edition is more than just a
revamped version. It is a whole new book. The larger format allows for a better appreciation and easier use
of the paintings, which illustrate subspecies, age and sex plumage variations, and flight characteristics.
The original plates have been carefully examined and amended where necessary. All species texts and
distribution maps have been evaluated and updated by specialists. Twelve new species have been included and
illustrated on three new plates. Also included is a discussion of bird classification and nomenclature, as
well as an 'essay section' highlighting differences between species that present images of different bird
groups are new features which enable users of the guide to find their way around the book more easily."

authoritative popular guide to the mammals of southern Africa introduces a new concept in southern African
mammal guides: that of a handbook offering in-depth information about the mammals that occur in the region.
Species are authoritatively discussed and each entry includes the following elements: Illustrations - each

African coastline. Dr. Peter Apps co-ordinated the revision of this field guide, based on the late Reay
Smithers' original text Land Mammals of Southern Africa."
Synopsis: "This guide presents those
approximately 250 species that are most likely to be seen in accessible habitats throughout the sub-region.
It is a book aimed directly at field identification, and the text written for each species highlights the
diagnostic feature or combination of features that will enable the birdwatcher to most easily identify the
bird. Specifically designed for use in the field, the book groups like species, thus enabling the
birdwatcher to quickly compare similar birds."
Synopsis: "This pocket-sized book has
been designed primarily for use in the field. Clear colour photographs show the general build, distinctive
coloration and scale pattern of each snake and other reptiles to aid identification in the field. Thumbnail
silhouettes are used to lead the reader to the reptile group most closely resembling the species seen. The
text concentrates on key identification features but also gives additional information on location,
breeding, venom, and other interesting characteristics. The maps pinpoint the areas in which the snakes
occur, and are used to denote the racial differences that occur amongst the various reptile groups in
different regions."
Synopsis: "Africa's wealth of
wildlife is legendary and draws thousands of visitors to the continent each year. Identification of the
different species is made easy by clear field text, colour photographs and characteristic features. Where
applicable, age and sex differences are illustrated. Features include: Compact and easy-to-use format.
Authoritative text. Grouping of those animals which are difficult to differentiate in the field, for
purposes of comparison. Thumbnail silhouettes, providing quick access to the group of animals most
resembling the one seen. Distribution maps showing occurrence in Africa, as well as a list of the major
parks and reserves in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Rwanda, Tanzania,
Uganda and Kenya in which each animal is likely to be seen."
Genaue Karten
der Verbreitungsgebiete. Das kompakte, handliche Format."
