Verleger: "The magnificent
photographs of landscapes, vineyards, wine cellars and winemakers, and the informative text of this
comprehensive book, provides a broad overview of winemaking in South Africa. Capturing the spirit and
tradition of the country's winemaking industry, the book is both a visually striking photographic portfolio
of the Cape's winelands and a tribute to South Africa's winemakers and the fine wines that so many of them
are producing today. The chapters of Wines of South Africa: Exploring the Cape Winelands cover a
number of themes: The Provisions of Nature introduces the topography, climate and soils of the
various wine regions of the Western Cape, revealing the area's great natural endowment for growing grapes
and making fine wines. Three Centuries of Cape Wines describes the history of winemaking in South
Africa, from the earliest planting of vines in the seventeenth century to the major developments since the
country’s emergence from political and economic isolation in the 1990s. Cape Dutch architecture, South
Africa's unique contribution to world architecture, is also highlighted in this chapter. Fruits of the
Earth and Sky examines the evolving preferences for different varieties and wine styles; the grape
varieties most commonly planted in South Africa; the typical seasonal activities on Cape wine farms between
harvests; and recent developments aimed at the Empowerment of labourers on wine farms. The Cape at
Harvest Time describes the critical operation of harvesting the grapes and extracting the juice. Making
Cape Wines focuses on 26 of South Africa's award-winning winemakers, who candidly reveal their
winemaking techniques and philosophies. The making of dessert and fortified wines is also featured. The
Cape Winelands takes a close look at the various wine-producing areas of the south-western Cape, their
climates and topography, and the distinctive wines that have become associated with them. A map of each area
is included. Appendix of Information for Visitors provides details of selected wine farms within easy
driving distance of Cape Town that are open to the public for wine tasting and sales."

Einleitung: "How would you like your
meal, sir? Reclining on a cushion and gazing over the rooftops of the ancient Stone Town? Bobbing gently on
the deck of an ocean-going dhow as the sun sets behind the sultan's palace? Or perhaps stretched out in the
shade of a palm tree, watching the fishermen dragging their catch up the beach? From scraps of cassava
roasted over charcoal to cauldrons full of aromatic pilau rice served up at lavish weddings, food is
consumed with gusto everywhere in Zanzibar and her sister island, Pemba. The islands' famous spices combine
with hundreds of fruit varieties and a wealth of fish and seafood to create a uniquely delicious and
distinctive cuisine little known in the rest of the world. Zanzibar's position on the edge of the Indian
Ocean has brought visitors from other lands since time immemorial - Persians, Chinese, Arabs, Indians and
many more have all sailed their vessels into Zanzibar's harbour over the centuries, bent on trade and
sometimes plunder. And with these strange visitors came new ways of eating - heaps of glass noodles from
China, sweetmeats from Arabia, spices from India. Zanzibar's cuisine, like its language, is a mix of
ingredients from all over the world. These days the visitors that arrive in Zanzibar are bent not on trade
or piracy, but on relaxation, indulgence and a revival of the spirit. International travellers have become
connoisseurs, able to circumnavigate the globe with ease in search of the finest, most decadent experiences
the world has to offer. Zanzibar is now firmly established as one of the world's most exotic destinations,
and the visitors that arrive here have high expectations to be fulfilled. They are not disappointed.
Zanzibar's hotels and restaurants combine Eastern hospitality with Western flair, providing standards of
design and cuisine the equal of any of the world's better-known playgrounds. This collection of recipes is
intended as a testament to Zanzibar's culinary abilities. The hotels and restaurants who allowed us to share
their secrets are among the best in the world, and their chefs are artists in their own right. We hope you
enjoy following in their footsteps."
