Klappentext: "I Speak of Africa
is a story about Londolozi Game Reserve
situated between the Drakensburg mountains and the eastern seaboard of southern Africa. It goes back to the
early days when man first discovered this vast wildlife paradise where in 1926, a few months after the Kruger National
Park was proclaimed, Charles Varty and Frank Unger bought the farm Sparta on the Sand river - in those
days it was considered a remote, dangerous, disease-ridden piece of Africa that no one in their right mind
would have touched! Sparta was to become the base for Londolozi - a Zulu word
meaning 'the protector of all living things' - the game reserve that has become world renowned and
was visited by President Nelson Mandela soon after his release from prison and which he described as a model
for conservation development. While still in their teens and studying at university, John and Dave Varty
became custodians of Sparta. It was a severely down-graded habitat and animals that had once been so
plentiful had all but disappeared. John, Dave and Shan embarked on a thrilling adventure to restore the land
and bring back the animals. It was no easy decision. By the 1970s through the damage that man had inflicted
on the habitat and on the wildlife, often in the name of conservation, the wildebeest population had been
virtually annihilated and even lion were so scarce that visitors were taken out in their pyjamas at midnight
if the roar of lion was heard! In the same decade for the first time in living memory rivers stopped
flowing. The book describes John, Dave and Shan Varty's efforts to start a game lodge with nothing but their
wits and a passion and determination to restore the integrity of a beautiful, untamed land. Their unswerving
goal, their mistakes, the joys and laughter, disappointments and tears, are only part of the tale. The
bigger story is of a wonderful conservation initiative which they began in a small way and which is now
spreading throughout the African continent and throughout the world. There has seldom been a family so
prepared to challenge the old conservation policies and strike out on new paths in their determination to
preserve not only the wildlife of Londolozi but, wherever
they can, to influence and to assist in conserving Africa's rich heritage of wildlife. The proof of their
efforts is evident at the wilderness paradise of Londolozi - where the
biodiversity and the joy of life in this little corner of Africa speaks for itself."

The Kalahari Survival in a Thirstland
Wilderness
von Nigel Dennis (Fotos), Michael Knight (Text) & Peter Joyce (Text)
Gebundene Ausgabe, 168 Seiten, 208
Farbfotos, SW-Illustrationen, 2 Farbkarten Struik Publishers
(Südafrika), November 1997, ISBN 1-86872-019-5
Klappentext: "The wider Kalahari is a
vast region of sandy, porous soils that extends across much of south-central Africa. Only in its southern
parts, though, does it come close to the popular perceptions of a desert: here, there are great, rolling red
dunes, dusty plains, ancient riverbeds that seldom flow with water, and a sparse plant life which, for most
of the year, lies withered beneath the scorching sun. Nevertheless, this harsh land, its scant grasses and
hardy thorn-trees support a surprising number of variety of life forms - animals, birds, reptiles and
insects that manage to cling to survival because they have adapted superbly (and often ingeniously) to the
pitiless rigours of the desert environment. Herds of gemsbok and graceful springbok, wildebeest and
hartebeest roam the great sunlit spaces, their movements across the hot, dry plains determined by the rare
rains and the gift of short-lived pasture they bestow. In turn, the antelope provide food for the large
carnivores of the desert - cheetahs, lions, leopards and hyaenas. Below these on the size scale are other
animals, less visually striking perhaps but just as fascinating in their struggle for life, and in their
drive for species immortality. It is this scene - the implacable desert, its resilient residents and their
battle against huge odds - that Nigel Dennis has captured on film. Few photographers can know the Kalahari
as intimately as he does, fewer still have the skill, and the flair, to portray the living desert in such
memorable fashion as he has done. The narrative text, by Michael Knight and Peter Joyce, is an ideal
companion to this outstanding visual essay. Written in eminently readable style, it provides sharp insights
into the nature of this strange, always hostile but often beguiling region, explaining many of its
mysteries, revealing the secrets that enable the wildlife to meet its formidable challenges."

Kalahari: Rivers of Sand
von Alain Degré (Fotos), Sylvie Robert (Fotos), Mike Knight (Text) & Lance Cherry (Design)
Klappentext: "The southern Kalahari
is a harsh land, a land of relentless sun and searing wind, a land of great thirst. But after a few precious
raindrops it is also a land of exquisite beauty - the dunes erupt in a blaze of colour and strange, shy
creatures leave the safety of their burrows to revel in the life-giving moisture. This book introduces some
of the Kalahari's denizens: plant, animal and human. We meet the sleek predators, the eland, wildebeest and
gemsbok - last remnants of the mighty antelope herds that once roamed huge tracts of southern Africa - and a
rich variety of life sheltering in the cool under the scalding surface of the sand. The evocative
photographs and illuminating text capture the fascinating interplay of transient beauty and seemingly harsh,
indestructible land to perfection. Ironically the Kalahari is not indestructible, it is extremely fragile.
What does the future hold for this delicate ecosystem?"

The Kruger National Park Wonders of an African Eden
von Nigel J. Dennis (Fotos) & Bob Scholes (Text), Vorwort von Robbie Robinson
Gebundene Ausgabe, 176 Seiten, 266
Farbfotos, 8 Farbkarten, 3 Tabellen New
Holland Publishers (UK/Südafrika), Oktober 1995, ISBN 1-85368-593-3
Klappentext: "With 650 000 people
visiting the Kruger National Park annually (80 000 of whom come from overseas and many of whom return
year after year), the time is right for a book that is not only useful to visitors to the Park but also a work of beauty and value - a volume that will become the definitive Kruger Park guide. The photographs illustrating this title are the culmination of two
years of dedicated work by renowned natural-history photographer Nigel Dennis. His evocative photographs,
with their luminous colours and immaculate compositions, have captured the essence of this ecological
sanctuary: its moods, vegetation, animals, birds and other inhabitants. Nigel Dennis is a master of the
twilight setting, which has lent a unique air to this stunning collection of his work - from the study of a
dung beetle to one of a two-hundred-head herd of wildebeest. The Kruger National Park - Wonders of an
African Eden includes some of his finest work to date. The text by Bob Scholes highlights the fact that
'the Kruger National Park is part of a dwindling global treasure, the collective natural
heritage of all mankind'. The body of the book is arranged in chapters covering seven ecological niches.
Each chapter informs the reader of what is special about the area in terms of animals, birds and flora, as
well as giving pertinent tourist information, such as accommodation and facilities available. There is an
introduction addressing the history of the Park, and the book concludes with a reference list and index. Dr. Scholes takes his
readers on a journey through Kruger, pointing out the aspects of the entire ecology - this is one of the few guides
that helps the reader to understand and visualize the web of interactions and relationships that make up the
ecosystem."
