Verleger: "A fresh look at a
well-known landscape - that of the southwestern tip of Africa surrounding the city of Cape Town. This book
reveals the immediate environment of the Cape Peninsula, showing rare and seldom seen animal and plant
species alongside common but often little-noticed inhabitants of this beautiful and diverse region. A
largely visual exploration, the book distinguishes seven habitats within the small area of the Peninsula,
ranging from mountain slope to ocean shore. The most famed habitat is that of mountain fynbos, a seemingly
drab vegetation that on Table Mountain alone comprises some 1,500 plant species, including many proteas.
With a discerning eye and skilful hand, photographer and author Stephan Wolfart has captured images of a
fragile, natural world which, despite encroaching human pressures and demands, has preserved much of its
beauty and its continuous pattern over time."

The Return The Story of Phinda Game
Reserve
1990 - 2000
von Shan Varty (Herausgeberin) & Molly Buchanan (Text),
Fotos von Richard du Toit, Design
& Illustrationen von Johan Hoekstra
Gebundene Ausgabe, 212 Seiten, 224
Farbfotos, Farb- & SW-Illustrationen, Karten
Londolozi Publishers (Südafrika), Februar 2000, ISBN 0-620-24584-0
Klappentext: "Maputaland's
extraordinary beauty and its biodiversity, described as one of the natural wonders of the world, beguiles
the senses. The rich tapestry of wetlands and rivers, pristine beaches and offshore coral reefs, the forests
of broadleafed and thorn trees, the grasslands and the ilala palmveld, provide a variety of habitats for
mammals, insects, reptiles, frogs and birds. Within a 15000 hectare area, 42 different frog species have
been identified, compared with the whole of Europe which has only 32. This natural wealth has the power to
fascinate all those who love nature. It weaves a magic and makes one want to go back again and again. The
land also had the power to seduce a group of international financiers, and persuade them to invest in a
project, which at the time, could only have been described as an impossible dream. The Return is the
story of that dream: to create a game reserve out of a group of derelict farms in the midst of Maputaland's
rural poverty. The four men who founded Phinda believed that
Maputaland was worth saving from the spiral of destruction into which is was being drawn through
monocultures and overgrazing which were rapidly destroying the water table and sapping what little nutrients
were held in the soil. They agreed that, no matter what the effort, they would find a way of establishing a
game reserve and returning the wildlife to a land that had once echoed with the sounds of thousands upon
thousands of animals. Their goal was to show, by example, that there was a sustainable alternative to the
poverty of the rural people. Bringing a new game reserve into being in Maputaland in 1990 could not have
provided a more difficult scenario. Phinda Game Reserve was in
the middle of a war-torn KwaZulu Natal while the country, at the time, was being ostracised by the rest of
the world because of its apartheid policies. Phinda faced disaster after
disaster in its early years. But, against all odds, it succeeded. The book describes the background to the
story of Phinda. It contains a brief
history of the Zulu and Thonga people, and how they can fit into a sustainable plan for the future. The
Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park is in line to achieve world heritage status which will open the door to new
opportunities. Phinda has shown what is
possible. The next stage is to involve everyone in making Maputaland one of the great ecological playgrounds
of the world. Richard du Toit is a remarkable wildlife photographer. He has executed the Phinda commission with
flair, skill and imagination, and has been joined by a group of outstanding specialist photographers,
including Roger and Pat de la Harpe who photographed the Zulu and Thonga people. The award-winning book
design, created by Johan Hoekstra, could not show more perfectly the richness and diversity of Maputaland's
wild beauty."

Richtersveld: The Enchanted
Wilderness
von Graham Williamson, Vorwort von Sir David Attenborough
Gebundene Ausgabe, 258 Seiten, über 850
Farbfotos, 90 Illustrationen Umdaus Press
(Südafrika), Oktober 2000, ISBN 1-919766-17-0
Verleger: "The Enchanted
Wilderness captures the excitement of the Richtersveld, an unspoilt African haven home to many unique
species of plant and animal life. Located in the north west corner of South Africa, with the Orange River as
its northern boundary. It is South Africa's only true desert and in this book, the first ever devoted to the
Richtersveld, Graham Williamson reveals the secrets of this hauntingly beautiful area. The landscape is
vividly described - from its great sand plains to the rugged mountains that change dramatically with the
varying light of day and seasons of the year. The Richtersveld boasts the highest bio-diversity of succulent
plants in the world. The evolution of the plants is such that some of them are endemic to areas measured in
square metres rather than hectares, or confined to a single gorge or mountain ridge. Original thoughts and
observations fill the chapters on the plants, where the author brings habitats, pollination, flowers and
evolution to life. The section on the plants is complemented by over 600 colour pictures. A checklist of
more than 1,700 plants is also included. The inhospitable Richtersveld landscape is home to numbers of
spectacular bulbs that miraculously burst forth during the hot summer months whilst in winter, annual
growth, in response to moisture condensation, carpets the vlakte with a kaleidoscope of brilliant colour.
Further chapters cover the fossil sites, the weather and the geology, with its ancient rocks and jagged
mountains dating back more than 2,000 million years. The Richtersveld is also home to the last remaining
traditional nomadic herders in South Africa who are sympathetically described and photographed. The epilogue
discusses the environmental status of the Richtersveld from prehistoric times to the present, and puts the
onslaught by man into this fragile ecosystem, into perspective. This book is a guide to tempt the traveler,
a source book for the history of the people and the geology of the area and a cornucopia of the fauna and
flora with illustrations of succulent plants, insects, reptiles and mammals. The author and his wife are
uniquely qualified, having spent more than 20 years exploring the Richtersveld. Their love of this
'enchanted wilderness' shines through in their enthusiasm for the vast open spaces and remote valleys. The
book is lavishly illustrated and is a must for all lovers of wild and unspoilt areas of the world."

catchers, white-tailed gnus, giraffes, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, antelopes... In this splendid book, the
photographer Franck Fouquet, indefatigable explorer of the African countryside, invites you to discover
South Africa, one of the last remaining natural paradises, a stage set for wildlife."

South Africa's Wildlife Heritage

Gebundene Ausgabe, 108 Seiten, 130
Farbfotos, Schwarzweißillustrationen
Central News Agency (Südafrika), 1980, ISBN 0-620-04356-3
Klappentext: "World famous
photographers Anthony Bannister and Peter Johnson have collaborated to produce South Africa's Wildlife
Heritage. Here, in full colour are all the big mammals - the eland, the oryx, the giraffe and the hippo;
the predators - heavy-bellied leopards and elegant cheetahs, snaggle-toothed crocodiles and swift-moving
snakes. Birds as varied as the two-toed ostrich flouncing over the veld and the glorious malachite
kingfisher... There are the small creatures such as the vervet monkey and the pangolin, the hedgehog and the
frogs - so often overlooked in books on our wildlife and yet no less remarkable than the elephant dusting
itself with cool and protective dust after a rollicking bath. The photographers have focused too on
underwater life and the hidden world of insects - penguins waddling from the surf and baby turtles making a
desperate dash to the sea. Mike Nicol, editor of African Wildlife, presents the animals in their
various habitats. In his introduction to the riches of our wildlife heritage, he traces the uneasy
relationship between man and wildlife through the centuries in South Africa and writes of the value of
conservation. The extended captions are packed with information making this book both informative and a
visually splendid experience."

Spirit of the Bush
von Malcolm Funston (Fotos), Paul Funston (Fotos) & Peter Borchert (Text)
Klappentext: "The South African
'bush' or bushveld - and specifically the Lowveld east of the Mpumalanga Drakensberg escarpment - is one of
the earth's fascinating places. Here roams the 'big game' for which Africa is famous: the elephant, buffalo,
zebra and antelope, the lion, cheetah, leopard, hyaena and wild dog. These are the actors on a wilderness
stage, where dramas of drought and plenty, death and survival are played out. In Spirit of the Bush
Malcolm Funston and his son Paul have photographed all the characteristic elements of this bushveld - the
trees that form the backdrop to the stage, the savanna plains, and the waterholes where much of the action
takes place. In all its moods, from misty early morning light through to the long shadows of late afternoon,
the gentle warmth of evening and the drama of the night, they reveal a world in which the rhythms of nature
still prevail. Within the inexorable cycle of seasons, the subjects of their photographs - the animals and
birds - play their parts, feeding and hunting, mating and rearing young. The photographers' remarkable
sensitivity, born of a deep love for their subject, is matched by Peter Borchert's perceptive text which,
while informing, also complements the mood of the visual element. Words and pictures together celebrate the
unique quality of the Lowveld. They are also a tribute to those who, for a hundred years, have struggled to
preserve the integrity of this wilderness, in the Kruger National
Park and the many other reserves along its western border."
