Synopsis: "Considered one of the
greatest man-eating sagas of all time, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo and Other East African Adventures is
the firsthand account of the infamous Tsavo lions. These lions - who for nearly a year terrorized East
Africa - succeeded in bringing the construction of a railway line to a complete halt, and have been credited
with the deaths of some one hundred people. Written by the legendary officer who shot these lions and risked
death several times in the attempt, The Man-Eaters of Tsavo and Other East African Adventures is not
only the story of this breathtaking hunt, but of Lieutenant-Colonel Patterson's other adventures in the
African bush."

US-Lizenzausgabe von The Elephant
People (Großbritannien, 1967).
Klappentext: "Tsavo National Park
in southeastern Kenya was 8,069 square miles of uninhabited and generally unexplored wilderness early in
April, 1948, when it was made into a game sanctuary. Two weeks after the official proclamation, three men -
Ronald Stevens, Peter Jenkins, and Frank William Woodley - established a tented headquarters at the park
boundary at Mtito Andei, determined to protect the elephants, rhinoceros, and other game under their care.
Woodley, then nineteen, came back from his first reconnaissance trip with sickening news - instead of a land
»where no vultures fly«, he found some sections of the park sky literally black with these scavenger
birds, attracted by dead elephants that had been shot for their ivory by poachers with poisoned arrows. Massacre
of the Elephants is the story of Bill Woodley's fight against the poachers and the coastal ivory ring,
whose members - crooked dealers, ivory craftsmen, middlemen, and agents - made a plush living off the
pitiful corpses of thousands of elephants. Feeling his way, sometimes posing as a shady white hunter,
Woodley became a bush detective. He investigated the Kamba and Liangulu poachers, true 'gentlemen' of the
bush, whose way of life was determined by the ivory racket centered on the Kenya coast. He met the 'big bow'
hunters, one of whom used a massive bow weight of 131 pounds. These men were skillful trackers, often
risking their lives against their elephant quarry. Woodley fought leopard snarers, the poison sellers, the
pit trappers, and the palm wine makers - all of whom lived off the poaching economy. With the help of
reformed poachers and his tiny force of ten rangers, Woodley began to capture and convict the ace hunters
and wreak havoc in the bush underworld. Facing ambush, poisoned arrows, and a disillusioned government -
which couldn't believe that poaching would ever be effectively suppressed - the anti-poachers conducted raid
after raid, until luck and persistence gave them the upper hand. By 1957, the anti-poaching campaign had
been completed. But two problems remained. Serekali (the government) had stopped elephant poaching,
yet the hunters could find no other way of life. And, ironically enough, the elephant population, now almost
fully protected, multiplied so rapidly that the ecology of the area was thrown completely off-balance.
Dennis Holman gives his readers the true flavor of the bush world - animals in mortal dread of their human
hunters, men facing the challenge of nature with courage and intelligence - and of the men who believed
deeply in their natural wildlife heritage."

My Serengeti Years
The Memoirs of an African Game Warden
von Myles Turner, Brian Jackman (Redaktion) & Bob Kuhn
(Illustrationen), Vorwort von Brian Jackman,Nachwort von Kay Turner
Gebundene Ausgabe, 251 Seiten, 15
Farbfotos auf 8 Tafeln, Schwarzweißillustrationen, 2 Karten Elm Tree Books (UK), Juni
1987, ISBN 0-241-12058-6
Klappentext: "As Deputy Chief Game
Warden of the Serengeti from 1956 to
1972, Myles Turner became a legendary figure in the fight to save Africa's vanishing wildlife. Born in
Northumberland in 1929, he grew up in Kenya and became a professional hunter before taking on the daunting
task of running the world's most famous national park. The Serengeti - a magnificent
wilderness the size of Holland - is the last place on earth where huge herds of plains game still roam at
will across immense distances, followed by large prides of lions and other predators. That it has survived
to become Africa's finest wildlife sanctuary is largely due to the untiring efforts of Myles Turner. When he
took over, much of the Serengeti was still
untouched and unexplored. Over the years, poaching had been allowed to go unchecked until it threatened to
destroy the animals the park had been created to protect. Although hopelessly outnumbered, Myles and his
dedicated ranger force were able to smash the poaching gangs and allow the herds to thrive once more. These
were critical times for the Serengeti, yet despite
the dangers and hardships of the anti-poaching campaign, it was in many ways a golden age for the national
park; a time when roads and tourist lodges had not yet been built and life was an endless adventure in a
pristine world of golden grasslands inhabited only by lion, buffalo and wildebeest. As the reputation of the
Serengeti grew, so the
numbers of researchers, scientists, film-makers and celebrities eager to visit it increased. Dr. Bernhard
Grzimek, author of Serengeti Shall Not Die, was one of the first to benefit from Myles' local knowledge and
expertise. Other distinguished visitors included the Duke of Edinburgh, Charles Lindbergh, George and Joy
Adamson and the explorer Wilfred Thesiger. The book is edited by Brian Jackman, author of The Marsh Lions, and has an
afterword by Kay Turner, Myles' widow."

Verleger: "Nowhere in Africa
is the extraordinary tale of a Jewish family who flees the Nazi regime in 1938 for a remote farm in Kenya.
Abandoning their once-comfortable existence in Germany, Walter Redlich, his wife Jettel, and their
five-year-old daughter, Regina, each deal with the harsh realities of their new life in different ways.
Attorney Walter is resigned to working the farm as a caretaker; pampered Jettel resists adjustment at every
turn; while the shy yet curious Regina immediately embraces the country - learning the local language and
customs, and finding a friend in Owuor, the farm's cook. As the war rages on the other side of the world,
the family's relationships with their strange environment become increasingly complicated as Jettel grows
more self-assured and Walter more haunted by the life they left behind. In 1946, with the war over, Regina's
fondest dream comes true when her brother Max is born. Walter's decision, however, to return to his homeland
to help rebuild a new Germany puts his family into turmoil again."
"Nowhere in Africa is the first English-language edition of the best-selling autobiographical
novel that is the basis for the 2003 Academy Award winner for best foreign-language film [Nowhere in Africa]."

Reason for Hope
A Spiritual Journey
von Jane Goodall & Phillip Berman
Gebundene Ausgabe, 313 Seiten,
Schwarzweißfotos auf 16 Tafeln Warner Books (USA),
September 1999, ISBN 0-446-52225-2
Klappentext: "Dr. Jane Goodall's
revolutionary study of chimpanzees in Tanzania's Gombe
preserve forever altered the very definition of 'humanity'. Now, in a poignant and insightful memoir, Jane
Goodall explores her extraordinary life and personal spiritual odyssey, with observations as profound as the
knowledge she has brought back from the forest. As a toddler she was entranced by all living things, and
over the years the little girl inspired by Tarzan and The Jungle Book became the woman who found
herself working with famed paleontologist Dr. Louis Leakey; accomplished scientific breakthroughs in Gombe; and,
ultimately, became a champion of the environment. It has been a life blessed with faith, resolve, and
purpose, though not without its crises. Jane Goodall endured the horrors of the London blitz and World War
II, postwar hardships, vicious rumors and 'establishment' assaults on the integrity of her work, a terrorist
attack and hostage taking in Africa, and her husband's slow, agonizing death. But throughout, her religious
convictions, although tested, have helped her survive - and Jane Goodall's pursuit of science has enhanced,
not eroded, her belief in God. In this book she candidly shares her life - talking of the love and support
of her mother, her son, her late husband, of friends and strangers - as well as the Gombe
chimpanzees she introduced to the world nearly forty years ago. And she gives us convincing reasons why we
can and must open ourselves to the saints within each of us. At one with nature and challenged by the
man-made dangers of environmental destruction, inequality, materialism, and genocide, Dr. Goodall offers
insight into her perceptions of these threats and celebrates the people who are working for earth's renewal.
Here, indeed, is Reason for Hope."
