The Game-Birds and Water-Fowl of South Africa
von Maj. B. Horsbrugh (Text) & Sgt. C.G. Finch-Davies (Illustrationen)
Gebundene Lederausgabe, kein Schutzumschlag, 166 Seiten, Farbillustrationen auf 67 Tafeln
Witherby & Co. (UK), 1912
Synopsis: "The text to this authoritative work includes all the standard ornithological details concerning the birds, but is considerably enlivened by the author's comments on the hunting of the various species. In the introduction the author acknowledges his debt to the illustrator. Claude Gibney Finch-Davies (1875-1920) was both an ornithological artist of note and a Sergeant in the Cape Mounted Rifles when the present work was published. According to Horsbrugh, Finch-Davies also provided all 'notes referring to Pondoland and Griqualand'."

A collection of 68 water-colours by C. G. Finch-Davies, originally commissioned to illustrate Lt.-Col. Boyd Robert Horsbrugh's 1912 volume "The Game-Birds and Water-Fowl of South Africa"
von Claude Gibney Finch-Davies (Illustrationen),
Alan Kemp (Text) & F.C. Barnicoat (Text), Vorwort von Patrick Horsbrugh

Klappentext: "Gamebirds & Waterfowl of Southern Africa is the showcase for 68 exquisite water-colours by the late Claude Gibney Finch-Davies, whose life - and the tragic circumstances surrounding his death in 1920 - is described in a comprehensive biography [by Alan Kemp] contained in this volume. Originally, the paintings were commissioned by Boyd Robert Horsbrugh, to illustrate his book The Game-Birds and Water-Fowl of South Africa, published in London during 1912. It was widely acclaimed and brought Finch-Davies recognition as an outstanding bird artist. All 68 illustrations are exceptional in that they have coloured backgrounds, whereas Finch-Davies's other paintings (numbering over 1,000) have simple, pencilled-in ones. This collection of originals has only recently come to light, through their donation to the Neues Fenster öffnen & Seite von anderer Website laden / Open new window & load page from other websiteTransvaal Museum, Pretoria, by Boyd Horsbrugh's nephew, Patrick, who lives in the United States of America. A brief, yet comprehensive, biography of Boyd Horsbrugh [by F.C. Barnicoat] is included in this book. The text accompanying each plate has been compiled by Dr. Alan Kemp of the Neues Fenster öffnen & Seite von anderer Website laden / Open new window & load page from other websiteTransvaal Museum, providing a useful insight into the biology of the species covered in this work."

Gamebirds of Southern Africa
von Rob Little (Text), Tim Crowe (Text) & Simon Barlow (Illustrationen), Vorwort von G.R. Potts
Gebundene Ausgabe, 128 Seiten, 134 Farbillustrationen (davon 49 ganzseitig), 116 Duotonillustrationen, 1 Farbfoto, 2 Übersichts- & 21 Verbreitungskarten, 1 Diagramm
Neues Fenster öffnen & Seite von anderer Website laden / Open new window & load page from other websiteStruik Publishers (Südafrika), September 2000, ISBN 1-86872-318-6
Klappentext: "Gamebirds are among the most familiar of bird groups, partly because they can be seen along urban fringes and even within the cities and towns themselves, but more particularly because they have been utilised by man since prehistoric times for both food and sport. These birds can be divided broadly by habitat into two main groups - waterfowl, which are dependent on aquatic habitats, and upland gamebirds (pheasants, grouse, quail and francolins among others), which occupy virtually every land area on the globe. It is the latter group that forms the focus of this book. The 21 upland gamebird species found in southern Africa fall variously into four groups: francolins and spurfowls (12 species), quails (three species), guineafowls (two species) and sandgrouse (four species). In Gamebirds of Southern Africa, the authors - both highly respected authorities in their field - summarise the large but scattered body of scientific research that has accumulated over the decades, presenting the most pertinent and interesting facts in an informative and readable fashion. The illustrated plates that accompany each of the species accounts are works of art in themselves. Created by Simon Barlow, they took a full two years to complete and involved intensive study of the birds within their habitats. As a result, the illustrations convey in accurate and painstaking detail the precise environment in which each species may be found. A highly authoritative text and beautifully rendered artwork combine to make Gamebirds of Southern Africa a significant and worthy addition to the growing volume of ornithological literature. It is an essential addition to the bookshelves of bird lovers, art lovers, lovers of nature and the conservation-minded."

Hunters of the African Sky
von Peter Steyn (Text) & Graeme Arnott (Illustrationen), Vorwort von Alan C. Kemp
Gebundene Ausgabe, limitierte Auflage von 4000 Exemplaren (Standard Edition), 96 Seiten, Farbillustrationen auf 35 Tafeln, 1 schwarzweiße & 6 farbige Arbeitsskizzen
Neues Fenster öffnen & Seite von anderer Website laden / Open new window & load page from other websiteStruik Winchester (Südafrika), 1990, ISBN 0-947430-17-2
Klappentext: "Africa has a particulary rich and magnificent array of birds of prey, making it one of the most exciting places in the world for raptor enthusiasts. The 80 southern African species depicted in this book are widely distributed throughout the continent and range in size from the huge Lappet-face Vulture and Giant Eagle Owl to the diminutive Pygmy Falcon and Pearl-spotted Owl. In 1982 Peter Steyn's and Graeme Arnott's respective talents as author and artist were combined to create the standard reference work Birds of Prey of Southern Africa. However, the original plates for this were considerably reduced in size to fit the format of the book, inevitably resulting in a loss of quality. In Hunters of the African Sky these plates are being republished in a much larger format to reveal the full colour, detail and subtlety of the artwork. In addition, Graeme Arnott has supplemented the 24 original plates by painting ten new scenic plates specially for this publication; these splendidly evocative paintings depict a select group of raptors - most of them in flight - in their various habitats. Peter Steyn's general-interest text is intended primarily for the layman, but also draws attention to new information on southern African raptors published since 1982. It is also a plea for the conservation of our birds of prey and deals with the many threats that face them in a changing and shrinking environment. Of particular interest is the chapter 'The Making of a Picture', an absorbing account of how the original plates for Birds of Prey of Southern Africa were completed over a period of six years, together with details of Graeme Arnott's painting techniques and the development of, and influences on, his style. Another unusual feature of Hunters of the African Sky is the inclusion of working drawings or 'feather-maps' of recently dead birds. These anatomical studies, which provide the artist with a valuable source of reference material when working on paintings at a later stage, give the reader a fascinating insight into his techniques and skills. Above all, this book is a celebration in picture and word of the magnificence and variety of our birds of prey - the hunters of the African sky - and will appeal not only to those who are fascinated by them and concerned for their future, but also to everyone who appreciates the talent and expertise of a remarkable bird artist."

Kingfishers of Sub-Saharan Africa
von Phillip A. Clancey
Gebundene Ausgabe, 212 Seiten, 24 Farbillustrationen (davon 23 ganzseitig), 40 Schwarzweißillustrationen, 20 Verbreitungskarten
Neues Fenster öffnen & Seite von anderer Website laden / Open new window & load page from other websiteJonathan Ball & AD Donker Publishers (Südafrika), 1992, ISBN 0-947464-65-4
Klappentext: "Many ornithologists have made the kingfishers their speciality, but not until now have the African species had a book devoted exclusively to them. In The Kingfishers of Sub-Saharan Africa, Dr. Phillip Clancey, doyen of southern Africa ornithologists, has taken the opportunity to record a fascination with this colourful family that had its genesis back in the early 1930s when he saw his first Common or River Kingfisher - a luminescent blue-green flash - flying arrowlike just above the surface of a partially iced-over small western Scottish river. Twenty kingfisher species qualify for inclusion in this book. Exquisitely detailed colour plates portray each in its natural surroundings. The text includes a comprehensive account of each bird's distribution, status, habitat, vocalisation, behaviour and breeding biology in addition to anatomical description and measurement and an account of geographical variation and subspeciation. Dr. Clancey deals expansively with the established historical background to the discovery and naming of the Afrotropical species and investigates the possible ancestral forms behind the initial colonisation of the continent and its adjacent islands. He also examines the evolution of species and their possible extinction in an Afrotropical context. Some subspecific arrangements have been recast, thus making a contribution to the standard literature on a singularly exciting and decorative family of birds."

Nesting Birds
Breeding Habits of Southern African Birds
von Peter Steyn, Morné A. du Plessis (Beratung)
Gebundene Ausgabe, 240 Seiten, 619 Farbfotos, Tabellen, 1 Farbkarte
Neues Fenster öffnen & Seite von anderer Website laden / Open new window & load page from other websiteFernwood Press (Südafrika), Oktober 1996, ISBN 1-874950-15-6
Synopsis: "More than 700 bird species breed in southern Africa. Most are resident in the region, but some come from other parts of Africa to lay their eggs, raise their offspring and then depart again until the next season. Resident or migrant, these birds enliven a wide variety of habitats - forest and bushveld, arid plains and mountain fynbos, wetland and shore. Some compete with man for living and breeding space, but others have adapted to man-made environments, extending their ranges as they find suitable nesting sites in plantations or on buildings, or follow the march of power lines across the landscape. Well-known ornithologist Peter Steyn has devoted a lifetime to studying birds in all parts of the sub-continent, spending many hours observing and photographing them in the field, meticulously noting their habits and idiosyncrasies, and consolidating his own research by collecting the published records of other ornithologists. Over the years he has built up a vast store of knowledge that now forms the basis of this book. Yet many observations still await explanation: why, for example, do Gabar Goshawks incorporate certain spiders in their nests? Our understanding of the biology of the birds of this region is undoubtedly extensive, but there is always more to discover. In Nesting Birds: Breeding Habits of Southern African Birds Peter Steyn explores the private lives of these birds. In liberally illustrated accounts of more than 90 groups of species - from Ostriches to canaries and buntings - he gives details of courtship and pairing, nest construction, and eggs, chicks and their care. Not only an ornithologist, he is a highly respected wildlife photographer, and his visual record of many fascinating aspects of bird behaviour on and off the nest is the work of a man who has deep empathy with his subject."

The Owls of Southern Africa
von Alan Kemp (Text) & Simon Calburn (Illustrationen), Vorwort von W. Roy Siegfried
Gebundene Ausgabe im Schuber, 184 Seiten, 58 ganzseitige Farbillustrationen, 22 Schwarzweißillustrationen, 12 Verbreitungskarten

Rückentext: "This monograph on the twelve owl species that inhabit the southern African subregion has been written by a leading specialist on birds of prey and illustrated by one of South Africa's best-known bird artists. The result is an authoritative and visually exciting book that will undoubtedly become a standard work on this group of birds. Owls, being mainly nocturnal, are difficult to study in the field, and our knowledge of them is therefore limited. However, the author, Dr. Alan Kemp, presents all the known facts about these fascinating, highly efficient raptors within a framework of current thinking on evolution, predator-prey relationships, energy cycles, and life histories, thus allowing inferences to be made about their behaviour and biology. The introductory chapters examine the life cycle of an owl; the ways in which it is adapted to, and affected by, its nocturnal environment; and the great variety of owls, both prehistoric and modern. These are followed by the individual species descriptions, each of which includes a narrative account of the owl's biology and habits, as well as a summary of the essential details on identification and habitat, distribution and status, hunting and diet, and breeding and productivity. A two-colour distribution map is provided for each species. The book has been superbly illustrated by Simon Calburn, who portrays each species in masterly detail in at least one large-format colour plate, which places the bird within a meticulously executed example of its habitat. The eighteen large paintings are supported by forty colour sketches and numerous pencil drawings that illuminate details of anatomy, posture, behaviour, and the stages of growth of the young. All twelve species were studied and drawn from life - some of them in the field, others in captivity - and almost 1,400 preliminary drawings were done over a period of four years. Several of the large paintings took more than four months of continuous work to complete. Ornithologists and collectors of fine illustrated books will welcome the opportunity to acquire this comprehensive and beautiful monograph on a little-known but fascinating group of birds. In terms of both scholarship and artistic achievement it is a work that will not easily be surpassed."

The Paintings of Norman Lighton for Roberts Birds of South Africa
von Norman C.K. Lighton (Illustrationen) & A.V. Bird (Redaktion), Vorwort von C.S. Barlow
Gebundene Ausgabe, kein Schutzumschlag, 34 x 47 cm, 115 Seiten, Farbillustrationen auf 51 Tafeln, 2 Schwarzweißfotos
South African Natural History Publication Company (Südafrika), 1976, ISBN 0-620-02027-X
Einführung: "... With the passing of Roberts in its old and familiar form, the time seemed opportune to publish a book which would present Lighton's paintings to the best advantage. When I first saw the original drawings I was thrilled by their authenticity; I decided to publish them in the largest practical format. For it is quite clear that such criticisms as may have been levelled at the illustrations in Roberts, have arisen from two main factors: the extent of the reduction in size (from 559 x 396 mm to 159 x 113 mm) and the use of letterpress for the colour reproduction. The bird illustrations in our present book are two-thirds of the size of the original drawings. The colourwork and printing have been done by lithography; everyone who has played any part in the production of this book, has looked upon it as a challenge, putting his best efforts into his work. A few minor alterations have been made to colouring at the suggestion of G. R. McLachlan, one of the editors of the present edition of Roberts, with the full compliance of Lighton. For example, the legs of the Fish Eagle, which are white in Roberts, have been corrected to yellow. The descriptive text of the plates is based on the Third Edition of Roberts, Fourth impression, 1975. ... Five plates of the original Roberts have been omitted. We decided that the Frontispiece (Ostrich and Ground Hornbill) did not fit the present book because of its horizontal format. According to R. C. Knight, present secretary of the John Voelcker Bird Book Fund, plates 31 (Larks) and 32 (Swallows) were lost 'due to enemy action' in England during the Second World War. Lighton told me that plate 48 (Sunbirds) was lost by a tobacco company in Cape Town many years ago when it was used for the printing of 'cigarette cards'. ... Plate 40 (Cisticolas) simply 'disappeared'. ... The remaining plates are the property of the John Voelcker Bird Book Fund and will in future be housed in the South African Library in Cape Town. (A.V. Bird)"
